Indian Railways Strengthens Action Against Poor Food Quality and Hygiene Violations

Indian Railways has intensified its efforts to improve passenger safety and service quality by taking strict action against food contractors over complaints related to poor food quality, unhygienic kitchens, and overcharging.

According to official information, penalties amounting to approximately ₹5.13 crore have been imposed on food service contractors for violations related to food quality and hygiene standards. In addition, the railway administration has cancelled the licences of several contractors, while action to blacklist certain firms is also being initiated in cases of serious non-compliance.

Railway authorities stated that no compromise will be made regarding the quality of food served to passengers or the hygiene standards maintained in railway kitchens. The action is intended to ensure better compliance with prescribed service standards.

Officials also noted that complaints regarding overcharging by some contractors have been taken seriously. Contractors have been instructed to charge only the rates approved by the railway authorities.

To further strengthen monitoring, Indian Railways is enhancing inspection mechanisms and encouraging the use of digital payment systems to improve transparency and reduce irregularities in food service operations.

Railway officials said passenger feedback and complaints will continue to play an important role in maintaining service quality. They reiterated their commitment to providing hygienic, quality food and taking appropriate action wherever violations are found.
