Karnataka Assembly Session Puts New Shivakumar Government to Its First Real Test

Karnataka Government Faces First Major Political Test as Monsoon Session Begins

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government faces its first major political test inside the Assembly as the monsoon session begins, with the BJP and JD(S) preparing a coordinated challenge to the Congress government.

The Opposition has identified several issues it plans to raise during the 10-day session, including the Bidadi Township project, the NICE Bengaluru-Mysuru Infrastructure Corridor, alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission recruitment, police recruitment and the return of B. Nagendra to the Cabinet.

The issue involving Nagendra is likely to draw particular attention. The CBI chargesheet in the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation case named him among the accused and alleged diversion of state funds. Nagendra has denied any wrongdoing.

For Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, the challenge goes beyond responding to individual allegations. The newly reshaped Cabinet will have to defend the government's record while ensuring that the session remains focused on its legislative and governance agenda.

The coordination between the BJP and JD(S) will also be closely watched. If the two Opposition parties maintain a common position inside the House, the government could face sustained pressure on several issues.

The session could set the political tone for the new government and indicate whether the Congress succeeds in controlling the Assembly agenda or the Opposition manages to drive the debate around its key concerns.
