The Maharashtra government has declared drought in 265 talukas across the state, including eight talukas from Pune district, following a prolonged rainfall deficit and growing concerns over water availability and crop losses.

The declaration comes as several parts of Maharashtra continue to face dry conditions that have affected Kharif crops and water availability. The government has indicated that immediate assistance will be provided to farmers in the affected areas.

In Pune district, eight talukas have been included in the drought-affected list. Farmers in these areas have reported the impact of prolonged dry spells on standing crops, with authorities carrying out field-level assessments to determine the extent of agricultural losses.

The state government has also announced relief measures covering crop damage, drinking water, fodder and agricultural support. Officials have been instructed to assess crop losses through field inspections, rather than relying only on statistical data.

Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharane has said that crop damage assessments are being carried out by the Agriculture and other concerned departments. Arrangements for drinking water and fodder are also being monitored in affected areas.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said the state government will provide immediate assistance to affected farmers and will not wait for financial assistance from the Centre before taking action. The government has also been working on relief measures under the state's drought-relief framework.

The drought declaration is expected to provide affected farmers access to government relief measures as the state continues to assess the impact of the prolonged dry spell on agriculture, water resources and rural livelihoods.
