Every year on 29 August, India celebrates National Sports Day to honour the contribution of sportspersons and to encourage young people to embrace sports as an essential part of life. The day marks the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players in the history of the sport.

Born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, Dhyan Chand grew into a sporting legend whose extraordinary skill and dedication helped establish India as a dominant force in international hockey during the early decades of the 20th century.

Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian Army at a young age, where his talent for hockey began to flourish. His dedication to the game was remarkable. It is said that he practised extensively after his military duties, often playing under the moonlight. This earned him the famous nickname “Chand,” meaning moon, associated with his night-time practice.

His international career reached its greatest heights during the Olympic Games. Dhyan Chand was a key member of the Indian hockey teams that won three consecutive Olympic gold medals—in 1928, 1932 and 1936. His performances, particularly at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, became part of India’s sporting history.

What made Dhyan Chand extraordinary was not simply his ability to score goals. His control over the hockey ball, movement, timing and understanding of the game made him appear almost effortless on the field. His remarkable command of the ball led to stories and legends about his stick, with some spectators even wondering whether it contained a magnet.

Beyond statistics and medals, Dhyan Chand represented discipline, humility and commitment. At a time when India was still under British rule, his performances gave millions of Indians a sense of pride. His success demonstrated how sport could inspire a nation and create a shared feeling of achievement.

Dhyan Chand was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of his contribution to sport. The Government of India later named its highest sporting honour the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, keeping his name connected with excellence in Indian sport. The National Portal of India continues to list the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award among the country’s major sports honours. 

National Sports Day is therefore more than a celebration of one hockey player. It is an opportunity to remember the values that Dhyan Chand represented—discipline, perseverance, teamwork and dedication. The Government has also emphasised grassroots sporting development through initiatives such as Khelo India, which aims to strengthen India’s sports culture and encourage participation at the grassroots level. 

For today’s children, Dhyan Chand’s story carries an important message. Success in sports does not come overnight. It requires regular practice, patience, physical fitness and the determination to keep improving.

As India encourages a new generation of athletes to dream bigger and compete on the world stage, the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand remains deeply relevant. His life reminds us that sporting greatness is built not only through talent, but through discipline and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
