Mumbai Taxi Meter Fraud: 5 Booked in Dahisar for Allegedly Using Electronic Devices to Inflate Fares

Dahisar Police have arrested five people for allegedly tampering with taxi and autorickshaw fare meters using electronic devices to artificially increase passenger fares.

According to the police, an electronic circuit was found installed inside a taxi meter. The device allegedly allowed the meter to register a higher fare than the actual amount payable by passengers. Police suspect that similar devices were also found in four other vehicles.

The alleged meter-tampering operation came to light during police action in Dahisar. Authorities seized five vehicles and the suspected electronic devices for further investigation.

The accused have been booked in connection with the alleged manipulation of fare meters and cheating of passengers. Police are now investigating how the devices were installed, how long the alleged operation had been active and whether more vehicles were involved.

The incident has raised concerns among Mumbai commuters, particularly at a time when revised taxi and autorickshaw fares have recently come into effect across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The revised fares became applicable from September 1, 2026.

Authorities are expected to examine the seized meters and electronic circuits as part of the investigation. Further details are likely to emerge as the police probe continues.
