Is the Cost and ROI becoming important for MBBS as well and Rightly So?

Rajasthan is not the only state with seats available after Round 2. Its Round 3 matrix lists 3,023 MBBS and 467 BDS seats. Maharashtra has reported 949 MBBS and 982 BDS vacancies, while Gujarat has reported 442 MBBS and 272 BDS vacancies after its second round.

These are snapshots from different state counselling processes. They cannot be added together to produce a national total, and they do not tell us how many seats will remain unfilled after the final round.

So, have students lost interest in medicine and dentistry? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Look more closely at Rajasthan: most of its available MBBS seats fall under private, management or NRI categories. The published annual tuition for a government MBBS seat is ₹73,900, while several private colleges list tuition in lakhs per year. Hostel charges, other fees and, in some cases, commitments for future years add to the financial decision.

That brings two questions into sharper focus for families: 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁?

Return on investment is more than a promised salary. It includes the years of study, possible further training, borrowing costs, career opportunities and the student’s genuine interest and suitability. A family may reasonably wait for a better college or a more affordable seat instead of accepting the first allotment available.

Seats also move between rounds when students upgrade, do not report, or when new seats enter the matrix. Later rounds took place in 2025 too. We should therefore be careful about calling every Round 2 vacancy a permanently “unwanted” seat.
