Sea Erosion Threat Looms Over Pentha and Satabhaya in kendrapada

Coastal Erosion Threatens Pentha and Satabhaya in Kendrapara

Kendrapara: Residents of Pentha and Satabhaya areas under Rajnagar block of coastal Kendrapara district are raising concerns over continuing sea ingress and coastal erosion. The two areas have a long history of shoreline erosion and displacement, with parts of the Satabhaya region having already been affected by advancing seawater.

Residents say repeated tidal activity and coastal erosion are affecting land and livelihoods in the area. Pentha, located close to the Bhitarkanika region, has previously witnessed major coastal protection interventions, including the installation of a geo-synthetic tube embankment. However, the effectiveness and long-term maintenance of such measures have remained subjects of discussion among experts and local communities.

Satabhaya's history of displacement

Satabhaya has faced severe coastal erosion for decades. Reports and studies have documented the loss of several villages in the area to advancing seawater, forcing residents to relocate to rehabilitation settlements, including Bagapatia. A recent study on coastal Odisha has identified Satabhaya and Pentha among stretches requiring attention because of their vulnerability to coastal erosion and possible submergence.

The erosion has also affected agricultural land and local livelihoods. Residents and environmental observers have raised concerns over increasing salinity and the impact of seawater intrusion on farming and fishing activities.

Concerns over the geo-tube structure

Pentha has been the site of a geo-tube-based coastal protection project. The structure was developed as a measure to reduce the impact of wave action and protect the adjoining saline embankment and vulnerable areas. Government project documents describe the intervention as a coastal protection measure designed for the Pentha area.

At the same time, reports over the years have raised questions about the structure's performance and maintenance. In January 2026, a portion of the geo-synthetic tube wall at Pentha was reported damaged after a fire, while officials also noted that sea waves had eroded portions of the structure.

Residents seek long-term protection

Local residents are seeking a more permanent coastal protection strategy for vulnerable stretches. Their demands include a scientifically designed stone embankment and a larger mangrove plantation programme along suitable coastal areas.

Mangrove restoration has also been discussed as part of broader coastal resilience efforts in Odisha. Previous reports have highlighted plantation and conservation initiatives in the Pentha and Satabhaya areas, while experts have stressed the importance of considering local ecological and coastal conditions when selecting protection measures.

The continuing concerns in Pentha and Satabhaya underline the need for long-term coastal planning based on scientific assessment, shoreline monitoring and the condition of existing protection structures. Any new intervention would need to take into account the area's environmental sensitivity and the experience of earlier coastal protection projects.
