Teachers' Day: The One Who Lifts the Curtain

Every year on September 5, India observes Teachers' Day to honour the contribution of teachers and remember Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, philosopher, statesman and former President of India. The occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on the wider role of teachers in shaping students and preparing them for life beyond the classroom.

The Curtain

A child enters a classroom with curiosity, uncertainty and a world of possibilities yet to be explored. One of the important roles of a teacher is to help students discover possibilities beyond what they already know.

The first lesson may be an alphabet, a mathematical concept or a question about the world around them. Such moments can encourage students to ask questions, explore ideas and develop confidence in their ability to learn.

For many young people, particularly those from smaller towns and communities, encouragement from a teacher or mentor can play an important role in helping them recognise their own potential.

However, the growing use of AI also raises important questions about the future role of human teachers. Technology can provide information quickly, but education also involves mentorship, encouragement, judgment, empathy and the development of social and ethical values.

As AI becomes more capable, teachers may increasingly need to focus on the aspects of education that go beyond information delivery. Helping students evaluate information, think critically, work with others and understand the consequences of their decisions can remain important parts of the teaching process.

What Students Can Carry Forward

For young people entering an increasingly fast-changing world, the distinction between information and deeper learning is important. Information can be accessed quickly, but meaningful knowledge develops through experience, reflection and application.

Students can benefit from seeking out teachers and mentors who encourage curiosity rather than simply providing ready-made answers. Exploring different subjects, asking questions and remaining open to learning can help them adapt to changing circumstances.

Teachers, meanwhile, can continue to play an important role by helping students develop the confidence and judgment needed to navigate an environment in which information and technology are constantly evolving.
