LPG Supply Shortage in Hyderabad and Telangana: Illegal Use of Domestic Cylinders Under Scrutiny

Hyderabad: The illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders by commercial establishments has emerged as one of the issues being examined amid reports of LPG supply shortages and rising prices in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana.

According to officials, some hotels, restaurants, tea stalls, street-food centres and function halls have been found using domestic LPG cylinders instead of commercial cylinders. The price difference between domestic and commercial LPG can make illegal use financially attractive for some establishments.

A domestic 14.2 kg LPG cylinder is generally priced lower than a 19 kg commercial cylinder. Officials have been taking action against establishments found using domestic cylinders for commercial purposes.

Domestic LPG Cylinders Seized During Inspections

In recent inspections and raids across Telangana, officials have reportedly seized more than 300 domestic LPG cylinders that were allegedly being used by hotels and small eateries for commercial purposes.

The Civil Supplies Department has also warned that establishments found violating LPG-use regulations may face penalties and other action as per the applicable rules.

Using domestic LPG for commercial purposes is prohibited under the applicable regulations. Consumers who notice suspected illegal use can report the matter to the concerned authorities or the LPG emergency helpline at 1906.

Concerns Over Availability for Domestic Consumers

The reported diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial use has raised concerns about the availability of LPG for household consumers. Some consumers have also reported difficulties in obtaining cylinders and allegations of cylinders being sold at higher prices through unofficial channels.

However, the LPG supply situation can be influenced by several factors, and illegal commercial use should not be treated as the sole reason for shortages or price changes without official confirmation.

Appeal for Inspections in Tandur

In Tandur town and surrounding areas, residents and concerned citizens have appealed to local authorities to conduct inspections of hotels, restaurants, tiffin centres and function halls to check compliance with LPG regulations.

The appeal has been addressed to the RDO Tandur, Civil Supplies authorities and the Tahsildar of Tandur Mandal, requesting appropriate action wherever violations are established.

If any commercial establishment is found using domestic LPG cylinders in violation of the rules, authorities may take action according to the applicable legal provisions, including seizure of cylinders and other penalties wherever prescribed.

Need for Proper Enforcement

Regular inspections and enforcement can help prevent the diversion of subsidised or household LPG supplies for unauthorised commercial use. At the same time, any action against establishments should follow due procedure and be based on verified violations.

The authorities' response and the outcome of inspections in Tandur and other parts of Telangana will determine whether further action is required to address the reported concerns over domestic LPG availability.
