Tripura Plans Advanced Vehicle Scanning System at Churaibari Border Check Post

Agartala: The Tripura government is exploring the introduction of an advanced vehicle-scanning system at the Churaibari check post on the Assam-Tripura border to streamline inspections and strengthen surveillance of goods entering the state.

Finance and Information Technology Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said the government is examining the use of technology that could reduce dependence on prolonged manual checking and enable digital monitoring of vehicles, drivers and consignments.

Proposed System Aims to Reduce Truck Delays

The proposed system is intended to reduce delays at Churaibari, where goods-laden vehicles are currently subjected to manual inspection. According to Singha Roy, trucks carrying perishable commodities can sometimes remain stranded at the entry point for several hours.

The minister said that on some occasions, around 50 to 60 trucks carrying perishable goods have remained stuck, resulting in losses for traders. The proposed scanning mechanism is expected to allow vehicles to be monitored with less interruption to their movement.

Digital Monitoring for Vehicles and Goods

According to the proposal outlined by the minister, the scanning system could digitally capture information related to vehicles, their drivers and the goods being transported. The collected information could then be transmitted electronically to government authorities for monitoring.

The technology is also expected to strengthen surveillance of goods entering Tripura and assist authorities in identifying vehicles or consignments that may require further inspection. The objective is to improve monitoring while allowing legitimate commercial traffic to move more efficiently.

Focus on Faster Movement and Border Surveillance

Singha Roy said the government is considering technology-driven monitoring in view of the changing role of conventional check posts following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The proposed system is therefore aimed at combining digital record-keeping with more efficient movement of commercial vehicles across the Assam-Tripura border.

Technology and Timeline Yet to Be Finalised

Details regarding the specific scanning technology, project cost and installation timeline have not yet been announced. The system remains under consideration and its implementation will depend on the government's final decision and related arrangements.
