Jalpaiguri Traffic Congestion Raises Concerns Over Unauthorised Vehicles

Jalpaiguri: Traffic congestion during peak hours has raised concerns among residents and commuters along the Jalpaiguri Shanti Para–Kodamtala stretch and other sensitive main roads in the town.

Residents said traffic movement becomes particularly heavy between 10 am and 11 am in areas located near important government offices, schools and other public institutions. The Shanti Para–Kodamtala stretch is also close to the SP office, Head Post Office and other key establishments.

Concerns have also been raised over the movement of vehicles that residents allege are operating without proper authorisation or adequate safety measures. Locals said such vehicles are frequently used to carry passengers and students, raising questions about road safety and traffic management.

Residents have urged the traffic authorities to verify whether all vehicles operating on sensitive roads have the required permits, registration, insurance and other documents.

The issue has also drawn attention to traffic management on roads used regularly by senior administrative and judicial officials. Residents have questioned whether stricter enforcement is required during peak hours to ensure smoother traffic movement and public safety.

There are also allegations among sections of the public that certain vehicle operators or local syndicates are able to operate despite restrictions. These allegations, however, require verification by the concerned authorities.

Residents have called for a higher-level review of traffic management in Jalpaiguri, including inspection of vehicle documents, enforcement of road-safety rules and action against any unauthorised operators found violating regulations.

The concerns are particularly significant because many students and other passengers reportedly depend on local transport services. In the event of an accident involving an unauthorised or improperly insured vehicle, questions could arise over accountability, passenger safety and compensation.

Authorities have been urged to clarify the rules governing the movement of commercial and passenger vehicles on sensitive and restricted roads and to ensure that enforcement is carried out uniformly.
