From Assam : 11 March 2026 –

Recently in Guwahati, Aaranyak, the foremost biodiversity conservation organization of Northeast India, inaugurated a website — www.wildlifegeneticslab.in — for its Wildlife Genetics Laboratory, along with the release of a comprehensive guidebook on various methods of wildlife DNA forensic investigation and sample collection. This website and guidebook are considered another milestone in the journey of Aaranyak’s Genetics Laboratory, which has become a pioneering institution in wildlife genetics and forensic testing in the region.

On 2 March, the website and guidebook were unveiled at Aaranyak’s administrative office in Beltola. The event was graced by Dr. Prabodh Bora, Director of Research (Veterinary Science) at Assam Agricultural University, as the Chief Guest, and eminent journalist and documentary filmmaker Mrinal Talukdar as the Guest of Honour. In his welcome address, Aaranyak’s President Jimut Prasad Sharma highlighted the organization’s unwavering commitment to science-based conservation. Vice President Narayan Mahanta, Treasurer Kaushik Bora, and other members of the executive committee were also present.

Udayan Borthakur, Director of Aaranyak’s Wildlife Genetics Division and founder of the laboratory, recounted its long journey since its inception in 2008, culminating in formal recognition by the state government under Section 329(4) of the Indian Citizen Security Code as a Wildlife Genetics and Forensic Laboratory. According to him, the newly launched website will help government agencies and other stakeholders easily access information on the laboratory’s research, conservation initiatives, and forensic services.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Prabodh Bora remarked: “With the rapid advancement of molecular technology, our ability to understand biodiversity and ecological processes has greatly expanded. The contribution of WGL in this region is commendable, and both government and private sectors must extend all possible support for its continuous growth and modernization.”

Mrinal Talukdar added: “We have witnessed Aaranyak’s transformation over 37 years — from a small conservation initiative to a powerful research institution equipped with advanced genetic facilities that have given biodiversity conservation in Northeast India a new dimension.”

The event concluded with an interactive session among guests, media representatives, and Aaranyak members, followed by a vote of thanks from Publicity Secretary Bijoy Shankar Bora.
