In a concerning revelation, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reported that the state has witnessed a troubling surge in communal violence and mob lynching incidents since he took office in June 2024. Speaking in the Assembly, Majhi disclosed that there have been 54 communal riots and seven instances of mob lynching between June and February, raising alarm over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Data presented by the Chief Minister highlighted that Balasore district has been the epicenter of communal unrest, accounting for 24 of the recorded riots. Khurda district, which encompasses the state capital, Bhubaneswar, follows closely with 16 reported incidents. The alarming statistics have prompted serious discussions about the effectiveness of the current administration in maintaining peace and order within the state.
Addressing queries from Biju Janata Dal leader Goutam Buddha Das, Majhi stated that law enforcement agencies have arrested 298 individuals in connection with the communal riots. However, he noted that less than half of these cases have resulted in chargesheet filings, raising concerns about the judicial process and the potential for justice in these matters.
The Chief Minister also elaborated on the seven mob lynching cases that have surfaced across four districts: Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Balasore, and Rayagada, where a total of 61 arrests have been made. These incidents have sparked outrage among citizens, and there is a growing demand for effective measures to combat such violence and restore faith in the state’s governance.
In response to the escalating violence, CM Majhi outlined proactive steps undertaken by his administration to curb further incidents. He mentioned the establishment of peace committees in various police station jurisdictions aimed at fostering dialogue and community engagement. Additionally, he emphasized that intelligence-gathering capabilities have been bolstered to preempt any attempts to disturb public tranquility. The Chief Minister assured that strict legal action would be pursued against those instigating violence, highlighting a commitment to restoring safety in the state.
