Ticketless Travel in Mumbai AC Locals Raises Concerns Among Commuters

Mumbai’s AC local trains, introduced to provide a more comfortable and premium travel experience, are increasingly facing issues of overcrowding, raising concerns among regular passengers.

Several commuters have pointed out that despite paying approximately ₹1,800 or more for a monthly season pass, overcrowding persists in AC coaches. Some passengers claim that the penalty for ticketless travel, reportedly around ₹370 per instance, may not be a strong deterrent. According to these observations, even repeated fines could cost less than a monthly pass, potentially encouraging misuse.

Passengers say this situation affects their daily commute, leading to discomfort and reducing the intended premium experience of AC travel. There are also concerns that such practices may result in revenue losses for the Railways and weaken overall compliance with ticketing rules.

Commuters have suggested measures such as increasing penalties, conducting more frequent and random ticket checks, and taking stricter action against repeat offenders to improve the situation.

Railway authorities have not yet issued an official response regarding these concerns. Further clarity is awaited on whether any policy changes or enforcement measures will be introduced to address the issue.
