New Delhi, March 8, 2026 — Political tensions escalated sharply after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the West Bengal government over alleged protocol lapses during President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the state for the 9th International Santal Conference.

Sharing a video of the President expressing disappointment, PM Modi said the incident was “shameful and unprecedented,” adding that the TMC government had “crossed all limits.” He stated that the situation had hurt the sentiments of people who believe in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities.

President Murmu, who belongs to the Santal tribal community, expressed concern over the last-minute change of the conference venue, which reportedly prevented many tribal participants from attending. She also noted that no senior state leaders were present to receive her during the visit.

The remarks triggered a political storm, with BJP leaders accusing the West Bengal government of disrespecting the highest constitutional office. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded by accusing the BJP of politicizing the issue and targeting her government.
