TMC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Unauthorized Handling of Postal Ballots Ahead of Bengal Vote Counting

The political atmosphere in West Bengal is heating up as the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has formally lodged a complaint with the Election Commission regarding what they describe as unauthorized sorting of postal ballot covers. This complaint comes just days before the crucial counting of votes for the recently held Assembly elections, further intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the electoral process.

Polling in West Bengal took place over two phases on April 23 and April 29, and the state witnessed a repolling exercise on Saturday at 15 polling stations in the South 24 Parganas district. The timing of the TMC’s complaint is critical, as it could have ramifications for the integrity of the election process, particularly at a time when tensions are already high among the political parties involved.

According to reports, TMC members stationed outside the strongroom at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra in Kolkata raised alarms after they observed eight trunks filled with postal ballots being brought to a room without any CCTV surveillance. The strongroom is known to house Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from various Assembly segments in northern and eastern Kolkata. An anonymous party member expressed concerns, stating that the TMC has consistently advocated for ensuring that every inch of space involving EVMs and postal ballots is monitored by CCTV, emphasizing the importance of transparency during the election process.

The incident has raised eyebrows regarding the security protocols in place during this sensitive phase of the electoral process. The TMC has demanded clarity on why these postal ballot trunks were taken into an unsecured room when there were existing protocols meant to safeguard the integrity of the voting process. As the situation unfolds, the party is calling for immediate answers from the Election Commission to ensure that the election remains fair and free from any malpractices.

Amid escalating tensions, the political rivalry was further heightened when Purnima Chakraborty, a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), arrived on the scene, adding to the already charged atmosphere. The situation is reflective of the broader context of West Bengal politics, where allegations of electoral misconduct are not uncommon, and the stakes are particularly high in this election cycle.

As the state prepares for the counting of votes, the scrutiny over the electoral process continues to dominate discussions among the electorate and political analysts alike. The TMC’s allegations serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and transparency in democratic processes, especially in a politically vibrant state like West Bengal.
