The devastating capsize of a cruise boat in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district has resulted in a tragic toll of 13 lives, with the recovery of the last two missing persons’ bodies on Sunday. Local authorities confirmed that the bodies of a five-year-old boy named Mayuram and his uncle Kamraj, who was in his fifties, were retrieved from the depths of the Bargi dam. This incident took place amidst a severe storm that struck the region, leading to the boat’s unfortunate overturning on Thursday.
Authorities reported that there were 41 individuals aboard the vessel when it capsized, and in a commendable rescue effort, 28 passengers were saved thanks to the swift actions of over 200 personnel. Search and rescue teams comprised members of the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), and local divers who worked tirelessly over three days to locate the missing. The grim discovery of the last two bodies marks a heartbreaking conclusion to the search operations.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Madhya Pradesh government has launched an official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, resulting in the immediate dismissal of three crew members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia package of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives.
