Kottayam, Kerala: Vir Chakra recipient Lance Havildar K. G. George (retd), a veteran of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, passed away at the age of 95 at his residence in Kottayam on March 8, according to family members.

George died early Saturday due to age-related ailments, his grandson Remo John said. Born in February 1931, he served in the Corps of Signals of the Indian Army, a crucial unit responsible for maintaining communication links between military formations during operations.

Bravery During the 1965 War

According to the citation for his Vir Chakra, George displayed remarkable courage and dedication during the 1965 war. Between September 6 and 10, 1965, he led his section in restoring disrupted communication lines in the Wagah sector despite heavy enemy shelling and repeated air strafing.

On the night of September 8–9, during an intense enemy attack, George risked his life to establish a communication line between the Brigade Headquarters and forward battalions. His efforts ensured uninterrupted coordination among troops at a critical moment in the battle.

For his exceptional bravery and devotion to duty, he was awarded the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.

Funeral Arrangements Delayed

Family members said funeral arrangements have been temporarily delayed as George’s son and another grandson are currently in Dubai and have been unable to travel immediately due to the ongoing tensions in West Asia. They are expected to return to India by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, George’s mortal remains have been embalmed and kept in a local mortuary in Kottayam. The funeral service and burial will take place after family members arrive.

Legacy of Service

George’s passing marks the loss of a decorated soldier who served the nation during one of its critical conflicts. His bravery during the 1965 war remains a testament to the courage and dedication of soldiers who ensured the success of military operations under extremely dangerous conditions.
