#Assam | Police have arrested 11 individuals from Assam and Tripura for their alleged links to Bangladesh-based extremist organisations suspected of attempting to expand activities in India’s Northeast, officials said on Tuesday.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Parthasarathi Mahanta disclosed the arrests during a press conference, stating that the operation was carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) based on intelligence inputs from central agencies. Raids were conducted across Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa and Darrang districts of Assam, and in Tripura.

According to Mahanta, ten of the accused were arrested in Assam and one in Tripura. He said the suspects were allegedly associated with the Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), described as an offshoot of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). No arms or ammunition were recovered during the raids, though several documents and digital materials were seized.

The arrested persons in Assam were identified as Nasim Uddin alias Najimuddin alias Tamim (24), Junab Ali (38), Afrahim Hussain (24), Mizanur Rehman (46), Sultan Mehmud (40), Md Siddique Ali (46), Rasidul Aalam (28), Mahibul Khan (25), Sharuk Hussain (22), and Md Dilbar Razak (26). Jagir Miah (33) was arrested from Tripura.

Police said IMK was founded in 2018 by former JMB member Jewel Mahmud. The commissioner also referred to increased activity of Bangladesh-based groups following political developments in Bangladesh in 2024, claiming that directives were issued to expand networks in India.

Investigations indicate that two Bangladesh nationals, identified as Umar and Khalid, allegedly coordinated with the Assam-based module, using encrypted social media platforms for communication, recruitment and fund mobilisation across Assam, West Bengal and Tripura.

Mahanta said the accused are being further interrogated and that security agencies remain on alert to monitor extremist activities in the Northeast.
