Air India Halts Selected International Flights Amid Rising Jet Fuel Prices

Air India Halts Selected International Flights Amid Rising Jet Fuel Prices

In a significant move reflecting the ongoing challenges within the aviation sector, Air India announced the temporary suspension of flights on several international routes from June to August. The decision comes as a response to soaring jet fuel prices and airspace restrictions in certain regions, which have added immense pressure on airline operations.

The routes facing disruption include major international connections such as Delhi to Chicago and Mumbai to New York. Additionally, flights from Delhi to Shanghai, Chennai to Singapore, Mumbai to Dhaka, and Delhi to Malé will be suspended throughout the month of August. In a bid to manage operational costs, Air India will also reduce the frequency of flights to key destinations including San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, Paris, and several other major cities.

This announcement follows a recent appeal from Air India, along with other domestic airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet, to the Indian government for a review of aviation turbine fuel prices. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has not only inflated global oil prices but has also led to airspace restrictions, compounding the challenges faced by the Indian aviation industry. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) constitutes approximately 40% of an airline’s overall operating costs, making these price hikes particularly impactful.

Despite the disruptions, Air India has assured its customers of continued operations, with plans to maintain over 1,200 international flights each month. This includes a robust schedule of 33 weekly flights to North America, 47 flights to Europe, and 57 flights to the UK, alongside services to Australia and various destinations in the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

The airline’s proactive measures come at a time when the aviation sector is grappling with unprecedented challenges. The government and airline executives are under pressure to find sustainable solutions to keep the industry afloat while ensuring passenger safety and service reliability. As Air India navigates through these turbulent times, the focus remains on providing continued service to its passengers while adapting to the fluctuating landscape of global air travel.
