Ambush on NH-202 Leaves Two Dead in Manipur’s Ukhrul District, Tensions Rise

Ukhrul, Manipur | April 18, 2026
In a shocking and tragic incident, two Tangkhul Naga men were killed in an ambush on National Highway-202 (Imphal–Ukhrul road) in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Saturday afternoon. The attack has heightened tensions in the region, especially as it occurred just a day after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh visited the district to reassure residents about highway safety.
Details of the Incident
The ambush took place around 2:30 PM near Yaolen Kuki village, approximately 4 kilometers from Litan. According to reports, the victims were part of a civilian convoy traveling from Imphal to Ukhrul when unidentified armed assailants opened fire using long-range weapons.
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after a security escort team had turned back near Litan, leaving the convoy vulnerable. In addition to the fatalities, at least four other vehicles in the convoy sustained damage due to the firing.
Victims Identified
Authorities have identified the deceased as:
SW Chinaoshang (45/46) – A retired soldier of the Indian Army’s Naga Regiment and a resident of Tashar village.
Yaruingam Vashum (42) – A resident of Kharasom village.
The loss of a former serviceman among the victims has added to the gravity of the incident, drawing concern from both civil society and security agencies.
Rising Concerns Over Security
The incident has triggered widespread concern over the safety of civilians traveling along key highways in Manipur, particularly in sensitive hill districts. The timing of the ambush—just a day after assurances from the state leadership—has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.
Security forces have reportedly launched search operations in the area to track down the attackers, though no group has claimed responsibility so far.
Tension in the Region
Ukhrul district, predominantly inhabited by the Tangkhul Naga community, has witnessed underlying tensions in recent times. This latest act of violence is likely to further strain the fragile peace in the region.
Authorities are expected to review convoy security protocols and intensify patrols along National Highway-202 to prevent further incidents.
