In a remarkable discovery beneath the waves of the Indian Ocean, scientists have uncovered a sprawling necropolis of ancient whale remains dating back over 5.3 million years. This significant find, led by researcher Xiaotong Peng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, occurs in the Diamantina Zone, renowned for its profound depths and unexplored ecosystems.

The phenomenon of ‘whale falls’—where the carcass of a whale attracts a plethora of marine life after its death—has fascinated researchers for years. Typically, when a whale dies, its body may float initially before succumbing to the deep, where it becomes a feast for scavengers. However, the scientific understanding of these events has been limited due to the rarity of well-preserved whale falls in the ocean’s depths. The newly discovered site represents one of the most significant whale fall ecosystems known to science, offering a time capsule of marine life from an ancient epoch.

This groundbreaking find was made during a specialized dive mission in February 2023, utilizing the advanced submersible vehicle, Fendouzhe. During the initial dive, the team stumbled upon numerous whale skeletons and fossils, primarily buried in sediment on the ocean floor. Following this discovery, the researchers embarked on 32 additional dives over the course of the following month, meticulously mapping the extent of the necropolis and documenting the extensive remains.

The richness of this site not only enhances our understanding of marine ecosystems but also sheds light on the historical biology and ecology of whales. These findings are pivotal, as they can provide insights into the past climate conditions and biodiversity of marine habitats in the Indian Ocean.
