BJP Takes Early Lead in Assam Assembly Election Results 2026

The vote counting process for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections commenced on Monday morning, revealing significant early trends. As of 10:22 AM, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in 96 out of the 126 seats, while the Congress party secured a position in 24 seats, according to the latest updates from the Election Commission. The counting began promptly at 8 AM, with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also showing a lead in one constituency.

With a total of 126 seats in the Assam Assembly, a coalition or party requires 64 seats to establish a majority. This election cycle saw polling take place on April 9, and several exit polls had previously forecasted a strong performance by the BJP. For context, in the previous 2021 elections, the BJP, leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), retained power by winning 75 seats. Sarbananda Sonowal, who served as chief minister during the NDA’s first term from 2016 to 2021, was succeeded by Himanta Biswa Sarma following the last elections.

This year’s voter turnout was remarkable, reaching 85.9%, marking the highest participation rate in Assam’s electoral history. In comparison, the 2021 elections recorded a turnout of 82%. The increase in voter engagement suggests a growing political awareness among the electorate. However, it is noteworthy that the Election Commission opted against conducting a comprehensive revision of the electoral rolls in Assam prior to these elections, as it did in 12 other states and Union Territories. Instead, a directive for a ‘special revision’ was issued in November, aimed at refining the electoral lists.

The unfolding political landscape in Assam is of immense significance, given the state’s diverse demographics and history of political volatility. The BJP’s strong early showing may reshape the political dynamics in the region and reflect the sentiments of the electorate towards the current administration’s policies. As the counting progresses, all eyes will be on the final results, which will not only determine the future governance of Assam but also influence the broader political narrative in India.

As the day unfolds, the performance of each party will be closely monitored, and the implications of these results will resonate throughout the country. The BJP’s lead may set the stage for further consolidation of power in the Northeast, while the Congress and other regional parties will be eager to assess their standing and strategize for the future. Keep an eye on this developing story for the latest updates and insights into the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
