CBI Nabs Key Suspect in 2026 NEET-UG Examination Scandal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended the primary suspect in the alleged paper leak scandal relating to the 2026 Undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). The announcement came from the Union government on Friday, shedding light on a case that has raised serious concerns about the integrity of one of India’s most crucial examinations for aspiring medical professionals.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions identified the main suspect as PV Kulkarni, a chemistry lecturer implicated in the examination process on behalf of the National Testing Agency (NTA). Kulkarni, hailing from Latur in Maharashtra, was arrested in Pune as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged malpractices surrounding the examination.

This revelation comes on the heels of the NTA’s decision to annul the 2026 NEET-UG examination following accusations of a breach of confidentiality. The NEET-UG is a pivotal examination that facilitates admissions into undergraduate medical programs across the country, and this year, over 22 lakh candidates had participated in the test.

In response to the allegations, the CBI initiated a formal inquiry after receiving a complaint from the Union Ministry of Education. So far, the agency has made several arrests, totalling at least seven individuals, and has conducted raids at multiple locations across the nation. The cumulative efforts reflect the seriousness with which the Indian government is treating this issue.

According to the Ministry, PV Kulkarni had unauthorized access to the examination question papers. Allegedly, in the last week of April 2026, he collaborated with another accused, Manisha Waghmare, who was arrested earlier, to orchestrate special coaching classes at his residence. This coaching was purportedly targeted at specific students, raising further questions about the systemic vulnerabilities in the examination process.

The NEET-UG paper leak scandal highlights the urgent need for reforms in examination protocols and monitoring mechanisms to ensure transparency and fairness. As the investigation continues, the CBI is under pressure to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and bring all responsible parties to justice. The damaging implications for students, teachers, and the educational systems at large are profound, prompting calls for stricter regulations and improved security measures to protect the sanctity of competitive exams in India.
