The crucial vote counting for the 2026 Puducherry Assembly elections commenced early Monday morning at 8 AM. As the counting process unfolds, political parties and their supporters eagerly await updates on early trends from all 30 constituencies within the Union Territory, which boasts a voter base of approximately 9.5 lakh.
The Puducherry Assembly consists of 33 members, of which 30 are elected by the public, while three members are nominated by the Union government, holding equal power to their elected counterparts. In the quest for a majority, parties must secure 17 seats as opposed to the standard 16, taking into account the nominated members. This election is particularly significant as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is projected to retain its hold on power, according to various exit polls.
Historically, Puducherry has showcased impressive voter engagement, and this year has marked a notable peak. The elections held on April 9 recorded an unprecedented voter turnout of 91.2%, surpassing the previous record of 86% set during the 2006 polls. The high participation levels indicate a robust interest in the democratic process, signaling that residents are keen on influencing their governance.
In the previous assembly elections in 2021, the NDA, led by the All India NR Congress, clinched victory, securing 16 seats and propelling N Rangasamy to the chief minister’s office. As the NDA prepares to defend its position, it faces a formidable opposition in the form of the Secular Progressive Alliance, which largely comprises the Indian National Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Adding to the political dynamics, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), under the leadership of Thol Thirumavalavan, made headlines earlier this year by announcing its intention to contest independently in Puducherry. On March 24, the party declared its strategy to field candidates in three constituencies: Ossudu, Nettappakkam, and Uzhavarkarai, thereby intensifying the electoral competition.
As the counting progresses, all eyes remain glued to the results, which will be pivotal in shaping the governance of Puducherry. The unfolding political landscape, marked by high voter turnout and strategic alliances, showcases the democratic spirit of the Union Territory and its residents’ aspirations for their leadership.
