Cape Town: A suspected health incident involving hantavirus infection on the cruise ship MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean has resulted in three deaths and several illnesses, according to the World Health Organization and South Africa’s health authorities.
Officials stated that while multiple passengers showed symptoms, at least one case of hantavirus has been laboratory confirmed. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and extent of the situation.
The vessel is currently docked near Praia, and health teams are working to provide medical support to passengers and crew. One affected individual remains in intensive care in a South African hospital, while arrangements are being made to assist other symptomatic passengers.
Hantavirus is a rare infection typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents. It can lead to serious respiratory illness in some cases. Health officials have emphasized that the risk of human-to-human transmission is generally low but are continuing detailed epidemiological assessments.
The ship had departed from Argentina and was on a multi-stop voyage including Antarctica and the Falkland Islands before heading toward Europe. Around 150 passengers were onboard at the time.
Authorities, along with the WHO, are conducting contact tracing and further laboratory testing to assess any potential spread. Passengers and crew are being monitored as part of precautionary measures.
Officials have advised that while the situation is serious, investigations are still ongoing and more clarity is expected in the coming days.
