Clashes Erupt in Manipur as Protesters Demand Justice for Slain Children

On Saturday, a significant protest in Imphal, Manipur turned violent as hundreds of demonstrators clashed with security forces after being prevented from marching towards the Chief Minister’s residence. The protest was organized by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, a civil-society group, to demand justice for two young children tragically killed in a recent attack, and to advocate for lasting peace in the region.

Eyewitness accounts reported that over 20 protesters sustained injuries during the confrontation, which escalated as demonstrators attempted to break through barricades set up by police. The protests originated from eight separate locations across the city, but security forces strategically blocked their paths, leading to heightened tensions.

As protesters grew increasingly agitated, some resorted to throwing stones, prompting the police to respond with tear gas in several key areas including Keishampat, Lamlong, Ima Keithel, and Singjamei. The situation quickly spiraled, with chaotic scenes unfolding as law enforcement sought to maintain order amidst the growing unrest.

The police reported that six individuals were arrested for their alleged role in the violence, though it was unclear if these arrests were directly linked to the events of Saturday. The protests came in the wake of a tragic incident on April 7, when two children lost their lives in Tronglaobi, a fact that has deeply resonated within the community and fueled calls for accountability.

Despite the violence, a delegation of protesters was eventually granted an audience with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. They submitted a memorandum detailing their demands, which include greater transparency and justice regarding the children’s deaths. In response, Singh urged the bereaved families to find solace and acceptance in the face of their tragic loss, highlighting the need for healing in a region that has long been marred by conflict.

This incident further underscores the ongoing tensions in Manipur, a state that has faced its share of political and social strife. The community’s frustration is palpable, as they seek not only justice for the victims but also a pathway towards a peaceful coexistence. As the state grapples with its complex issues, the voices of its citizens continue to echo with calls for peace and justice.
