Congress Backs Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party announced its support for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to establish a government in the state. This comes in the wake of the recent Assembly elections, where no party achieved an outright majority, leaving a political vacuum that needed to be addressed.

On Tuesday, Congress leader KC Venugopal revealed that the TVK had approached the party for backing in its efforts to form the government. He emphasized that the leadership of Congress had instructed the Tamil Nadu unit to evaluate this request carefully, taking into account the public sentiment as reflected in the electoral outcome. The Congress party articulated its commitment to “secular, progressive, and welfarist politics,” asserting that supporting the TVK aligns with its constitutional obligation to honor the voters’ mandate.

However, the Congress stipulated that its support hinges on the TVK’s commitment to exclude any communal elements that do not adhere to the principles of the Indian Constitution from this alliance. This condition is a reflection of the party’s stance to uphold secular values and prevent divisive forces from infiltrating the governance framework.

The partnership between Congress and TVK extends beyond the current state assembly. The two parties plan to collaborate for local body elections and in broader platforms such as the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the near future. This strategic alignment aims to consolidate their strengths against rival political factions, ensuring that they remain relevant in the rapidly evolving political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

In its electoral debut, the TVK emerged as the single largest party, securing 108 seats in the 234-member assembly; however, it fell short of the majority threshold, which stands at 118 seats. This shortfall necessitated the forming of alliances to create a stable governing body capable of addressing the pressing needs of the state.

The political scenario in Tamil Nadu has been characterized by fierce competition among various parties, and the Congress’s decision to support the TVK marks a pivotal moment in the region’s political history. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on how this alliance navigates the complexities of governance and fulfills the promises made to the electorate.
