Congress Challenges Supreme Court Decision on Meenakshi Natarajan's Rajya Sabha Nomination

The Congress party has taken a significant step in its legal battle by approaching the Supreme Court regarding the dismissal of Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh. This move comes in the wake of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raising objections to her candidacy, alleging that Natarajan failed to disclose crucial information related to a criminal case against her in Telangana.

Natarajan, a prominent Congress leader and the party’s only candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, faced a setback when her nomination was rejected by the election authorities. The BJP’s contention was centered around her affidavit, which they claimed omitted details about the criminal proceedings. In response to this rejection, Natarajan voiced her concerns, suggesting that the Congress party’s legal representatives were not afforded a fair hearing during the nomination process.

On Wednesday, a group of senior Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Jairam Ramesh, and Randeep Surjewala, addressed the media to discuss their legal strategy. Singhvi highlighted that under Section 33A of the 1951 Representation of the People Act, candidates are required to disclose any legal cases against them that carry a potential punishment of two years or more, along with any charges that have been framed. He emphasized that Natarajan had received a notice to appear before the court, which was prior to any legal cognizance being taken, indicating that, in the eyes of the law, no criminal case existed at that time.

The Congress’ appeal to the Supreme Court reflects the ongoing tensions between the two major political parties in India, as they continue to vie for influence in Madhya Pradesh. This legal confrontation not only underscores the importance of full disclosure in political candidacy but also raises questions about the fairness of the electoral process and the implications of political rivalry on candidates’ qualifications.

Natarajan’s situation has undoubtedly sparked discussions about the integrity of the electoral process, with the Congress party asserting that the rejection of her nomination was not based on legal grounds but rather on political maneuvering by the BJP. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome could have significant implications not only for Natarajan but also for the Congress party’s standing in the upcoming elections.
