Congress Supporter Dies After Assault in Asansol, Allegations of Political Motive Surface

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the political landscape of West Bengal, a 43-year-old Congress supporter, Debdeep Chatterjee, was allegedly killed in a brutal attack by a mob in Asansol. The tragic event unfolded on Saturday when an argument erupted following a minor traffic incident involving Chatterjee’s car and a parked motorcycle near his residence.

According to reports, Chatterjee, his wife Piyali, and their young son were returning home around 1 a.m. after attending a party when their vehicle brushed against the motorcycle. A group of men confronted them shortly after, leading to a heated exchange. Although Debdeep attempted to defuse the situation by apologizing, it escalated rapidly, resulting in a violent assault.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that Chatterjee was struck multiple times before falling to the ground, where he reportedly hit his head, losing consciousness. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival, leaving his family and community in shock. The police have confirmed that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, while three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident has sparked outrage among local Congress leaders, who allege that the attackers are affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). They have condemned the violence as a clear indication of the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, raising alarms about the safety of opposition party members. The Congress party’s West Bengal unit issued a statement emphasizing that such a brutal act reveals a troubling trend of political violence in the state.

This incident not only highlights the escalating tensions between political factions but also underscores the broader concerns regarding the security of citizens amidst growing political unrest. As families mourn their loved ones, questions about political accountability and the need for protective measures for opposition workers are more pressing than ever. The culprits behind such violence must be held to account to restore faith in the system and ensure the safety of all citizens in the region.
