‘Daadi Ki Shaadi’: A Stylish Journey of Love that Misses the Mark on Humor

In the world of Indian cinema, films that explore the lives of senior citizens often tread the line between comedy and heartwarming drama. However, Ashish R Mohan’s latest offering, ‘Daadi Ki Shaadi,’ seems to shift gears, prioritizing preachiness over the light-hearted humor that its premise promises. The film revolves around the character of Vimla, played with flair by Neetu Kapoor, a stylish grandmother poised to embark on a new journey of love.

Vimla’s character defies traditional stereotypes often associated with elderly women in Indian society. Living alone in a picturesque cottage in Mashobra, she embodies grace and independence, sporting an enviable wardrobe that contrasts sharply with the surprise and disapproval exhibited by her grown children. Her sons Jeevan and Naag, and daughter Sunaina, are seen as busy professionals, absorbed in their own lives, a common reflection of contemporary familial dynamics where the elderly often feel neglected.

The plot takes a significant turn when Vimla announces her intention to remarry, a decision that rattles her children and brings them rushing back home. The timing of her announcement coincides with a pivotal moment in her granddaughter Kannu’s life, who is on the verge of her own engagement. Kannu’s mixed feelings about her grandmother’s news reveal her internal conflict—while she is relieved to divert attention away from her impending nuptials, she is also caught in a web of familial expectations and her own desires.

Adding to the dramatic twist is Tony, Kannu’s college sweetheart, who finds himself unwilling to let Vimla’s plans overshadow his own romantic pursuits. His infatuation with Kannu drives him to hatch schemes aimed at thwarting her grandmother’s plans for marriage, thus setting the stage for a tug-of-war between the generations. This conflict, while rife with potential for comedic moments, unfortunately leans heavily into melodrama, detracting from what could have been a more nuanced exploration of love and relationships across different ages.

‘Daadi Ki Shaadi’ thus emerges as a film with considerable promise, yet it falls short in delivering the engaging humor that its title suggests. Instead, it opts for a more didactic approach, focusing on the societal implications of love and marriage at an older age. This shift from comedy to a moral lesson may alienate viewers looking for light-hearted entertainment and heartfelt laughs.
