Among these literary figures is KS Nisar Ahmed, whose poetry reflects the vivid tapestry of Karnataka’s past, particularly centering around the historic locality of Mavalli. Once the domain of the strategic genius and Mysore ruler, Hyder Ali, Mavalli holds a significant place in the annals of Karnataka’s heritage.

In the 18th century, Hyder Ali established a magnificent 40-acre garden amidst the hills of Mavalli, which eventually evolved into the sprawling 240-acre botanical garden known as Lalbagh. This lush green expanse not only served as a royal retreat but has also become a symbol of Karnataka’s natural beauty. For Ahmed, who was born in the nearby Devanahalli, the connection to this revolutionary figure is profound; it also ties him to Hyder Ali’s legendary son, Tipu Sultan.

Nisar Ahmed’s journey into poetry began with the influence of Kannada literature giants, particularly KV Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu. As a young boy, reading Kuvempu’s epic, Kanooru Subbamma Heggadathi, transported him to the picturesque landscapes of Malenadu, Kuvempu’s homeland, igniting a desire within him to draw inspiration from nature. However, the humdrum of urban life often stifled his creative impulses, and it was in the tranquil surroundings of Lalbagh that he found solace and inspiration.

Every evening, following his Quran classes at the local masjid, Ahmed would make his way to Lalbagh. This botanical garden became his sanctuary, a personal ‘Malenadu’, where he could immerse himself in the beauty of flora and silence and allow his thoughts to blossom into poetry. The serenity of the garden offered him a respite from the city’s chaos, allowing him to explore themes of pain, beauty, and the intricacies of human emotions through his verses.

As he reflects on his five-decade journey as a poet, Ahmed acknowledges the profound impact that the rich cultural and historical backdrop of Karnataka has had on his work.
