FIR Filed Against Bengali Actors for Alleged Provocative Social Media Posts Amid Post-Poll Violence
The West Bengal Police have initiated legal action against notable Bengali actors Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Swastika Mukherjee for allegedly making incendiary remarks on social media following the violent aftermath of the 2021 Assembly elections. The situation has reignited discussions about the responsibilities of public figures in politically charged environments.
The first information report (FIR) was lodged at the Gariahat Police Station based on a complaint from advocate Joydeep Sen. He contended that the actors’ comments on social media were not only provocative but could also have potentially incited further political violence during a tumultuous time. The 2021 Assembly elections were marked by significant tension, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) winning 215 out of 294 seats while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure only 77 seats.
Following the election results in May 2021, allegations of widespread violence emerged, leading to a significant investigation. The Calcutta High Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the violence, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was also formed to delve deeper into the incidents that unfolded during that period. In this context, the remarks made by Chattopadhyay and Mukherjee have come under scrutiny for potentially inflaming an already volatile situation.
Specifically, the controversy stems from a social media post by Parambrata on May 2, 2021, where he suggested that the day should be termed as “World Thrashing Day” following the TMC’s victory. This post was met with a lighthearted response from Swastika, who reportedly remarked, “Hahaha, let it be.” Such interactions on public platforms have raised questions about the influence of celebrity opinions in the realm of politics and how they may impact public sentiment.
The complaint lodged by Sen highlights a growing concern among citizens and political analysts regarding the role of social media in modern political discourse. As the lines between personal expression and social responsibility blur, the legal actions taken against these actors may set a precedent for how public figures are held accountable for their online communications. This incident underscores the pressing need for a more responsible approach to social media usage, particularly in politically sensitive times.
