Fuel Prices Surge Again: Bengaluru Among Worst-Hit as Consumers Feel the Heat

New Delhi/Bengaluru — Fuel prices across India witnessed yet another sharp increase this week, triggering concerns among daily commuters, transport operators, and businesses already grappling with rising living costs. State-run oil marketing companies revised petrol and diesel rates upward for the fourth time in less than two weeks, pushing prices in several metro cities to record highs.

According to the latest revision, petrol prices have increased by approximately ₹2.61 per litre, while diesel prices have risen by nearly ₹2.71 per litre nationwide. The hike comes amid escalating global crude oil prices, continued geopolitical tensions in West Asia, and the weakening Indian rupee against the US dollar.

In Bengaluru, the impact has been especially severe. Petrol prices in the city have crossed ₹110 per litre in several areas, while diesel rates have also seen a steep jump. Industry experts say Karnataka’s higher state taxes and transportation costs have contributed to the sharper increase compared to some northern states.

For ordinary citizens, the repeated hikes are beginning to strain monthly budgets. Daily commuters in Bengaluru expressed frustration as transportation expenses continue to climb. Auto-rickshaw drivers, cab operators, and delivery executives say the increase directly affects their earnings, especially in a city where traffic congestion already leads to high fuel consumption.

“We are spending hundreds more every week just on fuel,” said a cab driver operating in East Bengaluru. “Passengers don’t want fare hikes, but our costs keep increasing.”

Public transport and logistics sectors are also expected to feel the pressure. Economists warn that sustained fuel price increases could eventually lead to higher prices for essential goods, as transportation remains a critical component of India’s supply chain economy.

Oil companies have defended the revisions, citing international market conditions. Crude oil prices have remained volatile due to ongoing tensions involving Iran and disruptions around key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. India, which imports the majority of its crude oil requirements, remains highly sensitive to global energy fluctuations.

Analysts believe the situation may not stabilize immediately. Reports indicate that if international crude prices continue rising and the rupee weakens further, additional revisions cannot be ruled out in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders and consumer groups have criticized the government over high fuel taxation, arguing that excise duties and VAT continue to keep domestic fuel prices elevated despite periods of softer global crude prices earlier this year. Calls for temporary tax relief have intensified, particularly from transport associations and small business owners.

The latest hikes are also expected to impact inflation trends nationwide. Financial analysts warn that rising fuel costs could influence food prices, logistics charges, and overall household spending patterns in the months ahead.

As fuel prices continue their upward trajectory, consumers across India — particularly in major urban centers like Bengaluru — are left preparing for further economic pressure in an already expensive environment.
