Government Blocks Telegram Access Ahead of NEET UG Re-Exam to Prevent Paper Leak Manipulation

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced a temporary ban on the messaging app Telegram, effective until June 22, just one day after the re-examination of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET UG) scheduled for June 21, 2026. This decisive action follows serious allegations concerning the use of the platform in facilitating paper leaks during recent examinations, prompting the National Testing Agency (NTA) to urge strict measures for safeguarding the integrity of the examination process.

In addition to restricting access, the ministry has mandated the disabling of Telegram’s message-editing feature until June 30. The NTA claims that this functionality has been exploited to create misleading narratives regarding test questions, thereby undermining the credibility of the examination system. According to the agency, the editing capability allowed users to alter previous messages, inserting actual exam content to fabricate evidence of leaks after the fact.

The NEET-UG examination is a critical gateway for aspiring medical students seeking admission to undergraduate courses in India. Initially held on May 3, the exam was cancelled due to allegations of a paper leak, which sent shockwaves through educational circles and raised concerns about the fair conduct of such significant assessments. As the NTA prepares to conduct the re-exam, it is working rigorously to ensure that all necessary precautions are in place to uphold the integrity of the process.

In a formal statement, the NTA expressed its support for the government’s actions, emphasizing that the measures are both timely and necessary to protect the examination’s sanctity. The agency’s recommendations led to the directives issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighting the collaborative effort to combat examination malpractices in the digital age.

As educational institutions and students gear up for the re-examination, the NTA is implementing various safeguards to prevent any potential misconduct. The impact of technology on education cannot be overstated, and with the rising incidence of examination-related fraud, authorities are compelled to take proactive steps. The current restrictions on Telegram signify a broader commitment to ensuring that exams are conducted fairly, allowing students to compete on equal footing.

In conclusion, the government’s firm stance against the use of technology in facilitating examination irregularities serves as a critical reminder to students and educators alike. As the NEET UG re-exam approaches, the focus remains on maintaining the fairness and integrity of the examination process, ensuring that the hard work and dedication of genuine candidates are recognized and rewarded.
