Guwahati:
The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam Government to stop buffalo fights being conducted in different parts of the state and to take appropriate legal action against organisers.
The directive was issued during the hearing of a petition filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India, which raised concerns over the conduct of such events in several districts.
Court Observations
The court noted that buffalo fights may be in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and referred to earlier judicial directions related to the use of animals in such activities. It instructed the state’s Home and Political Department to ensure strict enforcement of the law.
Background
Earlier, the Assam Government had issued a notification in December 2023 allowing certain traditional events, including buffalo and bulbul bird fights, with guidelines. However, the High Court had subsequently set aside this notification.
Despite this, allegations were raised that such events continued to be आयोजित in parts of the state, leading to the present petition.
Petitioner’s Submission
The petitioner organisation submitted materials, including photographs and videos, to support its claims. It also sought directions for preventing such events and ensuring compliance with existing laws.
Statements
A representative of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India welcomed the court’s direction and reiterated concerns regarding animal welfare.
Conclusion
The High Court’s latest direction emphasizes enforcement of existing legal provisions related to animal protection. Authorities are expected to take necessary steps in compliance with the court’s order.
