Income Tax Department Files Complaint Against Tamil Nadu Congress Chief Over Allegations of Unlawful Detention

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has grown increasingly tense as the Income Tax Department has taken action against K Selvaperunthagai, the president of the state Congress party. On Tuesday, the department lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai police, following allegations made by Selvaperunthagai regarding his purported unlawful detention during a recent search operation.

The controversy erupted after Selvaperunthagai took to social media, claiming that he had been ‘unlawfully confined’ within the Sriperumbudur Assembly constituency, under the guise of a search. His statements coincided with the visit of prominent Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Tamil Nadu, raising suspicions that this was a strategic move to hinder the opposition party’s activities as the Assembly elections approach. The polls are set to occur in a single phase on April 23, with results expected to be announced on May 4.

In response to these allegations, the Income Tax Department categorically denied conducting any searches or enforcement actions against Selvaperunthagai. According to reports from Live Law, the department insisted that the claims made by the Congress leader are ‘entirely baseless and factually incorrect.’ It emphasized that no searches were carried out either at his residence in Kilpauk, Chennai, or anywhere else on the reported date of April 20 or any time recently.

This incident highlights the ongoing political friction in Tamil Nadu, where the Congress party is actively campaigning against the ruling AIADMK and its allies. As the state gears up for the Assembly elections, accusations and counter-accusations are likely to escalate, reflecting the intense rivalry among political factions. The Congress party, led by K Selvaperunthagai, has condemned the actions as attempts to stifle dissent and manipulate the electoral process.

The current situation not only raises questions regarding the fairness of the electoral process but also serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of power in Indian politics. With major political players like the Congress and AIADMK at odds, the repercussions of such incidents could significantly impact voter sentiment as the elections approach. Thus, all eyes will be on how this unfolding drama plays out in the weeks leading up to the polls.
