New Delhi, June 25: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated that an Indian passport primarily serves as an official international travel document issued to eligible Indian nationals. Officials have noted that while a passport is an important government-issued identity and travel document, questions relating to citizenship may, where required, be examined in accordance with applicable laws, records, and legal procedures.
The clarification comes as the Government of India continues the phased expansion of electronic passports, commonly known as e-passports. These passports contain an embedded electronic chip designed to securely store the holder’s personal and biometric information, helping strengthen document security and reduce the risk of forgery.
According to government information, the e-passport initiative is being implemented to enhance the security, reliability, and efficiency of Indian travel documents while aligning with international travel standards. The programme is expected to facilitate smoother immigration procedures and improve verification processes at airports and border checkpoints.
Officials have stated that the transition to e-passports is progressing across the country as passport services continue to be modernised. The electronic chips used in these passports are manufactured domestically by the India Security Press, Nashik, supporting India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous security and document-production capabilities.
The government has said that the adoption of e-passports is aimed at improving travel document security, increasing operational efficiency, and providing citizens with technologically advanced passport services. As India continues its digital transformation initiatives, the e-passport programme represents a significant step toward modernising public services and enhancing the integrity of official travel documents.
