India Faces Record Power Demand as Heatwave Grips the Nation

In an alarming trend, India’s peak power demand reached unprecedented levels for the fourth straight day, as a relentless heatwave continues to affect numerous regions across the country. According to the Ministry of Power, the peak demand soared to an impressive 270.8 gigawatts on Thursday at 3:45 PM, marking a significant increase in energy consumption linked to the widespread use of cooling devices.

The surge in electricity demand has been driven largely by the soaring temperatures, with many citizens relying heavily on air conditioners and coolers to combat the oppressive heat. The ministry noted that Thursday’s peak demand was satisfied through a diversified mix of energy sources, with thermal power accounting for a substantial 62.8%. Solar energy contributed 22.0%, while hydro and wind energies provided 5.8% and 5.0%, respectively. Other energy sources complemented the supply chain to meet this escalating demand.

Furthermore, the availability of coal at thermal power plants remains stable, with supply levels being closely monitored by the authorities. This proactive approach has ensured that the energy grid can withstand the current heat-induced demands. As temperatures across the country continue to rise, the government had already anticipated that peak power demands could reach 271 gigawatts this summer, a prediction that seems increasingly on point.

This week has seen India’s power demand reach new heights, rising from 257.3 gigawatts on Monday to 260.4 gigawatts on Tuesday and then jumping to 265.4 gigawatts on Wednesday. The extreme weather conditions have also led to alarming reports, with Delhi recording its highest May nighttime temperature in nearly 14 years at 31.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. In response to the severe heatwave, the meteorological department issued an orange alert for the national capital, advising residents to take precautions.

As the situation evolves, the dual challenge of maintaining energy supply while ensuring the well-being of the population becomes critical. With more hot days ahead, the government and energy providers are tasked with ensuring that the nation’s power grid can handle the unprecedented demand, while also addressing the environmental concerns associated with increased thermal power generation. The Indian populace now watches closely as the summer progresses, hoping for relief from the sweltering heat and a stable energy supply.
