Manipur Security Forces Foil Arms Sale, Arrest Four Insurgents from UNLF(P)

In a significant crackdown on insurgent activities, security forces in Manipur have successfully recovered a substantial cache of weapons and apprehended four members of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei), a valley-based insurgent group. The operation took place in the Lamdeng area of Imphal, following intelligence reports regarding planned illegal arms sales in the region.

The proactive operation commenced on Wednesday when local law enforcement acted on credible information, leading to the initial arrest of two UNLF(P) operatives, identified as Heisnam Thomas Singh and Arambam Tomtom Singh. During the operation, authorities seized an InSAS light machine gun, three magazines, and a total of 14 live rounds from the suspects, raising serious concerns about the illegal arms trade in the area.

As the situation unfolded, the security forces faced unexpected resistance when associates of the arrested insurgents opened fire, resulting in a brief exchange of gunfire. The prompt response from the security personnel ensured the safety of civilians and the successful apprehension of two additional suspects, Ningthoujam Rakesh Singh and Chingakham Mahesh Singh. The arrests of all four individuals underscore the ongoing challenges posed by insurgent groups operating within the region.

During the interrogation, the arrested insurgents revealed that they had ventured into the area with the intention of engaging in arms trafficking, which highlights the persistent issue of illegal arms proliferation in Manipur. Security analysts have indicated that such activities not only threaten the stability of the state but also pose broader implications for national security.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for heightened vigilance and coordinated efforts among security forces to combat insurgency and ensure peace in the region. Manipur, which has a long history of insurgent movements, continues to grapple with these challenges, making the role of security agencies crucial in restoring normalcy.
