India’s Diamond Industry Faces New Challenges Amid Iran Conflict

India's Diamond Industry Faces New Challenges Amid Iran Conflict

The bustling lanes of Varaccha in Surat, known as the diamond capital of India, reflect a vibrant yet precarious industry. Here, numerous interconnected buildings serve as workshops where skilled artisans meticulously polish and shape diamonds. Each room is filled with workers hunched over tables, illuminating their craft with the glow of tubelights. At the center of each workstation lies a spinning metal disc, humming softly as workers use handheld devices resembling thick pens to delicately strike tiny diamonds against the surface.

Among these artisans is Harish Patel, who transitioned from being an employee to an entrepreneur in October 2025. After spending three decades in the diamond polishing business, he took the leap to start his own operation, investing in five polishing tables and hiring thirty workers. Patel had envisioned a profitable future, expecting to earn an additional Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 monthly. However, the recent escalation of conflict in West Asia has drastically altered the landscape for diamond traders, plunging them into uncertainty.

The onset of war in the region has created ripples across the global diamond market, triggering disruptions in supply chains and causing prices to fluctuate unpredictably. With many traders heavily reliant on imports from countries affected by the conflict, the ripple effect is evident in Surat. The diamond industry, which had already been grappling with challenges due to the pandemic, now faces deeper crises as international buyers become hesitant to place orders amidst geopolitical tensions.

Patel’s workshop, once a hub of activity, has seen a decline in orders. Many of his employees, who once worked diligently polishing diamonds, now find themselves with reduced workloads. “It’s disheartening,” Patel shared, as he looked around at the workers waiting for assignments. The uncertainty surrounding the diamond trade has left many artisans questioning their future, as their livelihoods hang in the balance.

The situation is further exacerbated by rising operational costs, which have become unsustainable for many small-scale operators. As a result, some workshops have had to scale back operations or even shut down entirely, leading to a surge in unemployment within the community. In a city that prides itself on its rich history and craftsmanship in diamond trading, the mood is somber as artisans navigate this turbulent period.

Industry experts have called for immediate measures to support the affected diamond traders and workers. While government interventions and policy changes may offer some relief, the road to recovery appears long and fraught with challenges. As the conflict in West Asia continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will further impact the diamond industry in India.

In this vital sector that contributes significantly to the Indian economy, the resilience of the artisans and entrepreneurs will be put to the test. The diamond industry, a symbol of India’s craftsmanship, now finds itself at a crossroads, where the glimmer of hope must combat the shadows of crisis.
