Jamai Sasthi: A Celebration of Family Bonds, Tradition and Grand Feasts

Kolkata, June 21: Jamai Sasthi, one of Bengal’s most cherished family festivals, was celebrated with enthusiasm and warmth across West Bengal and in Bengali communities in other parts of India. The occasion is dedicated to strengthening family ties, particularly the relationship between a son-in-law (jamai) and his in-laws.

The festival is widely known for its elaborate culinary traditions. Markets witness a surge in demand for premium fish varieties such as Hilsa (Ilish), Katla, Chital, Prawn (Chingri), and Bhetki. In many places, buyers gather early in the morning to purchase the best quality fish, creating a festive atmosphere in local markets.

A traditional Jamai Sasthi feast often includes a wide variety of dishes prepared with care and affection. Fish delicacies, mutton preparations, seasonal fruits such as mangoes, litchis, jackfruit and bananas, along with popular Bengali sweets, form an important part of the menu. Desserts such as rosogolla, mishti doi and langcha are commonly served during the celebration.

After extensive preparation, the dishes are traditionally served on large kansa (bell metal) plates, with separate bowls for different items. The feast symbolizes hospitality, affection and respect for family relationships.

In many households, the celebration concludes with sweets, paan and the exchange of gifts. Sons-in-law often present sarees, clothing or other gifts to their mothers-in-law and family members as a gesture of gratitude and goodwill.

Beyond the food and festivities, Jamai Sasthi remains an important cultural tradition that brings families together and celebrates enduring bonds of love, respect and togetherness.
