A special court in Bengaluru has delivered a life sentence to Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni for his role in the 2016 murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yogeshgouda Goudar. The court’s decision, which was announced on Friday, comes after Kulkarni and 15 others were found guilty earlier this week. In addition to the life sentence, Kulkarni has been fined Rs 30,000.
The case stems from the murder of Goudar, who was killed in June 2016. The investigation into the high-profile crime was conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which uncovered a complex web of criminal conspiracy and unlawful activities surrounding the case. The charges against Kulkarni included murder, criminal conspiracy, and tampering with evidence, among others.
Vinay Kulkarni, who serves as the MLA from Dharwad, had been arrested in November 2020 but was granted bail by the Supreme Court in August 2021. However, this temporary relief was revoked by the Supreme Court in June 2022, following concerns about his attempts to influence witnesses during the legal proceedings. The court’s ruling highlighted the serious nature of the allegations against him, emphasizing the need for a thorough judicial process.
The special court’s ruling on Wednesday detailed how the accused had conspired to eliminate Goudar, marking a significant moment in Karnataka’s political landscape. Despite being acquitted of charges related to the Arms Act, the court made it clear that the evidence presented was substantial enough to warrant a life sentence for Kulkarni.
Kulkarni’s political career has been tumultuous. He previously served as the MLA for Dharwad from 2013 to 2018, before losing his seat in the subsequent elections. In a surprising comeback, he was re-elected in 2023. However, this conviction raises questions about his future in politics and the implications for the Congress party in Karnataka.
The sentencing has sparked reactions across the political spectrum, shining a light on the ongoing issues of political violence and corruption in the state. This case serves as a reminder of the darker side of Indian politics, where power struggles can lead to tragic consequences.
