Kuki Militants from Myanmar Launch Attack on Naga Villages in Manipur's Kamjong District

In a shocking turn of events, suspected Kuki militants believed to be operating from Myanmar launched a fierce attack on several Naga villages in Kamjong district of Manipur on Thursday. The region, which borders Myanmar, has been witnessing escalating tensions, and this incident marks a significant uptick in violence that has raised concerns among local communities and authorities.

According to reports, a group of approximately 100 armed men targeted the villages of Choro, Wanglee, and Namlee, which are situated close to the international border. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the assailants began firing indiscriminately into the towns, causing panic and chaos. They reportedly set fire to 18 houses, leaving many families displaced and vulnerable. The Tangkhul Naga Long, an apex body representing the Tangkhul Naga community, has expressed deep concern over these attacks, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

In the aftermath of the assault, it was reported that two civilians sustained bullet wounds, while several others were taken hostage and allegedly tortured by the militants. This brutal incident follows closely on the heels of recent clashes between the Kuki and Naga communities that resulted in the deaths of three individuals in Ukhrul district on April 24. It is notable that two of the deceased were from the Kuki community, while the third was a Tangkhul Naga, signifying the ongoing ethnic strife in the region.

Adding to the distressing news, Naga People’s Front MLA Leishiyo Keishing, who represents the Phungyar constituency, revealed that the assailants also abducted two individuals before retreating back across the border to Myanmar. Keishing has been vocal about the external aggression posed by militant groups such as the Kuki National Army (Burma) and the People’s Defence Force, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention. “For a long time, we have witnessed internal conflicts, but this marks a dangerous shift towards external threats,” he stated.

The incidents in Kamjong district are indicative of the broader tension that has been simmering in Manipur, driven by ethnic divisions and violent clashes between communities. The Kuki and Naga groups have a complex history, often leading to violent confrontations over territorial claims and political representation. The involvement of militants from across the border only complicates an already fragile situation.

Local authorities are now under immense pressure to address the violence and restore peace in the affected areas. With the threat of further attacks looming, there is an urgent call for a cohesive strategy to tackle both internal and external threats. The central government, alongside state officials, must step in to ensure the safety and security of the residents while pursuing a long-term resolution to the ongoing ethnic strife.
