AI image-generation company Midjourney has announced a new division, Midjourney Medical, and unveiled its first hardware project: a full-body ultrasound scanning system designed to create detailed 3D images of the human body in a short period of time.
According to the company, the proposed system would place a user in a water-filled scanning chamber where ultrasound sensors collect imaging data from multiple angles. Midjourney says the technology is intended to generate a comprehensive 3D body map in approximately 60 seconds.
The company has also announced plans to open a wellness and scanning center in San Francisco in 2027, where the technology could be introduced to the public.
Medical experts have urged caution regarding the project. Specialists note that ultrasound technology currently has limitations and does not replace established imaging methods such as MRI and CT scans for many diagnostic purposes. They emphasize that the system will require clinical validation, regulatory review, and real-world testing before its effectiveness can be fully assessed.
Midjourney has stated that the initial version of the scanner is intended for wellness and body-composition mapping rather than medical diagnosis, while the company pursues additional regulatory approvals for future applications.
The announcement marks a significant expansion beyond the company’s image-generation business and into healthcare-related technology. Industry observers say the project’s long-term impact will depend on its technical performance, regulatory progress, and adoption by healthcare professionals and consumers.
