Controversy Erupts in Maharashtra as School Principal and Teachers Face Action Over Student Performance to 'Pakistani' Song

A significant controversy has surfaced in Maharashtra’s Jalna district, where a principal and two teachers have been booked following a student performance that allegedly featured a song purported to be of Pakistani origin. The incident, which reportedly occurred during an annual school event, has drawn widespread attention and raised questions about cultural sensitivity and nationalism in contemporary India.

The principal, Wazhiyoddin Siddiqui, has defended the performance, asserting that the song is actually from the popular Turkish television series, Ertuğrul, which has gained a substantial following in India for its historical narrative. According to reports from PTI, the event took place in February 2025, but the video clips and images from the performance began circulating on social media, igniting a backlash from various quarters.

Critics quickly condemned the school’s actions, claiming that the students had danced to a song associated with Pakistan, a country that has had a tumultuous relationship with India over the decades. Social media posts claimed that a photograph of Mumtaz Qadri, a former Pakistani commando executed in 2016 for the assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, was displayed during the performance. Qadri was often cited as a controversial figure, having claimed his actions were motivated by Taseer’s defense of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian accused of blasphemy and later acquitted.

In response to the uproar, police have filed charges against Siddiqui and the two teachers, citing actions that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of India, as well as the promotion of enmity among groups. They are accused of spreading misinformation that could disrupt national unity. While the principal maintains that the claims regarding the performance are exaggerated and misleading, the incident highlights the sensitive nature of cultural representation in India, especially in the context of historical and political narratives.

This case underscores the challenges educators face in navigating the complexities of cultural interpretation and national identity. As the public discourse continues to evolve, the repercussions of this incident could have lasting implications for how schools approach cultural performances in a diverse and interconnected society.
