N Rangasamy, the founder of the All India NR Congress, has once again taken the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Puducherry, marking his fifth term in this role. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, with Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan administering the oath.
The recent Assembly elections saw the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), headed by the All India NR Congress, achieve a significant victory on May 4, winning 18 out of the 30 contested seats. This success allows the NDA to form the government in the Union Territory, while the Opposition group, known as the Secular Progressive Alliance, comprising the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), secured only six seats. Additionally, the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, clinched two seats, while its ally, Neyam Makkal Kazhagam, managed to secure one seat.
Although the Puducherry Assembly consists of 33 seats, three of those are nominated by the Union government, giving them equivalent powers to the 30 elected members. Rangasamy, aged 76, successfully contested the elections from both the Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies, showcasing his continued influence in Puducherry’s political landscape.
Rangasamy has a long political history, having first served as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2006 to 2008 as a member of the Congress party before forming his own party. His leadership has been marked by various challenges, including managing the unique needs of the Union Territory, which has a diverse population and a range of socio-economic issues.
His return to office reflects the confidence voters place in him, particularly in light of the NDA’s substantial victory. In a statement shared by the BJP Puducherry, the party expressed optimism regarding the future, stating, “Following the overwhelming success of our National Democratic Alliance in the Puducherry 2026 Assembly elections, Mr. @CM_NRangaswamy has taken office once again!” This sentiment resonates with many in the region who are hopeful for stability and development under his leadership.
