Nationwide Mock Drill Conducted to Assess Disaster Preparedness

On May 2, 2026, National Disaster Management Authority conducted a nationwide mock drill across multiple states and union territories to assess emergency preparedness and response coordination.

The exercise covered various disaster scenarios, including earthquakes, floods, industrial accidents, and fire emergencies. Major cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai participated, involving local disaster response teams, police, fire services, and healthcare institutions.

Authorities simulated emergency situations to evaluate evacuation procedures, communication systems, and rescue operations. In several locations, earthquake scenarios were conducted, where response teams demonstrated search-and-rescue techniques. Hospitals also activated emergency protocols to assess their readiness for handling mass casualty situations.

Officials from NDMA stated that the drills aim to evaluate response efficiency and identify gaps in existing disaster management systems. According to an official statement, such exercises help improve coordination and response time during emergencies.

In some cities, including Hyderabad, emergency alerts and evacuation drills were conducted in public spaces and residential areas. Citizens were guided on safety practices such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold” during earthquake simulations.

Coastal regions carried out flood and cyclone preparedness drills, while industrial areas conducted mock exercises for handling hazardous material incidents.

Experts have highlighted the importance of such drills in improving disaster readiness, especially in the context of increasing climate-related risks and urban expansion. Regular exercises are seen as a way to enhance public awareness and reduce panic during real emergencies.

Authorities indicated that similar drills will continue in the future with broader participation and improved planning.
