The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that the re-examination for the 2026 undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will take place on June 21. This decision comes in the wake of the cancellation of the original test, held on May 3, due to serious allegations of a paper leak.
Over 22 lakh (2.2 million) candidates participated in the May 3 examination, which is crucial for students aiming for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India. Following allegations of a leaked question paper, the Rajasthan Special Operations Group launched an investigation that revealed the existence of what was termed a “guess paper” that had circulated before the exam. This guess paper allegedly contained questions that closely resembled those on the actual test, raising significant concerns over the integrity of the examination process.
According to the Rajasthan Police, the guess paper featured around 410 questions, with approximately 120 of them matching the chemistry section of the NEET-UG test. The NTA’s decision to cancel the exam was further solidified when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepped in, arresting at least seven individuals linked to this scandal. Investigators have conducted searches across various locations in the country, and two arrests were made as recently as Thursday.
The CBI has initiated a formal inquiry following a complaint lodged by the Union Education Ministry, which led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). The agency has invoked several serious charges, including those pertaining to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal breach of trust under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Public Examinations Prevention of Unfair Means Act.
The scandal has sent shockwaves throughout the country, particularly among aspiring medical students who depend on a fair examination process to secure their futures. The NEET-UG serves as a gateway for numerous candidates hoping to gain access to prestigious medical institutions, making the integrity of such assessments paramount. With the new examination date set, students are now faced with a renewed sense of anxiety and anticipation as they prepare to retake the test under heightened scrutiny.
The NTA has encouraged candidates to stay updated through their official website for any further announcements or instructions regarding the re-examination. The agency has also assured that measures will be taken to ensure the integrity of the upcoming test, aiming to restore faith in the fairness of the assessment process.
