Bihar Ashok Dham Temple Stampede: 6 Devotees Killed, Several Injured Amid Heavy Shravan Rush
At least seven devotees were killed and several others injured after a stampede-like incident broke out at the Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on Monday morning, August 17.
The incident occurred amid a large rush of devotees who had gathered at the temple to offer water to Lord Shiva during the holy month of Shravan.
According to officials, a large number of devotees had gathered at the temple for Jalabhishek on the third Monday of Shravan. The sudden surge in the crowd reportedly led to chaos, with devotees falling over one another.
Police and district administration officials quickly reached the spot and launched rescue operations. Several injured devotees were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shivam Kumar confirmed that seven devotees had died in the incident. Authorities continued rescue and relief operations at the temple premises.
Preliminary reports suggested that panic among devotees and the sudden movement of the large crowd contributed to the stampede-like situation. Reports also mentioned that an electric pole or wire may have fallen near the crowded area, although the exact circumstances leading to the incident were still being investigated.
District officials said the crowd had increased significantly during the morning hours. Reports also indicated that the arrival of trains in the area contributed to the sudden increase in the number of devotees near the temple.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the incident and said that necessary instructions had been given to the administration to ensure proper and prompt treatment of those injured.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of effective crowd management and safety arrangements at major religious gatherings, particularly during festivals and auspicious days when large numbers of devotees gather at temples.
